Types Of Financial Aid

 

Federal Student Aid

Grants - financial aid that doesn’t have to be repaid (unless you withdraw from school and owe a refund)

Loans - money borrowed for college or a career school; loans must be repaid with interest. Click here to learn more about the types of federal loans available. 

Work-Study - a program where you earn money to help pay for school by working  an on-campus job.

State Student Aid

 The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) is the state agency in Kentucky that administered state financial aid programs, including grants, scholarships, and Kentucky's 529 college savings plan

Scholarships

 Money that does not need to be repaid unless you fail to meet the requirements of the specific scholarship or you withdraw from school and owe a refund. Scholarships are awarded by national, state, local, and private organizations and can be based on academic achievement, financial need, community service, career field of interest, athletics, and more!   • Check your schools financial aid website to see what they have to offer. You can also contact your school's financial aid counselors to ask questions.
  • Also check with the college or department where your major is to see if they offer scholarships.
  • Make sure you fill out any extra applications for aid your school may require. Be mindful of deadlines!

 

Student Loans

Student loans are available from federal, state, and private sources, but must be paid back with interest when leave school, even if you do not complete your degree or certification.

Before you apply for a loan, be sure to understand the different types of student loans available, because the type of loan you choose can make a big difference to how you much interest you are charged and how you must repay what you borrow. You can find out what federal loans are available by filling out your FAFSA. In Kentucky, the Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corporation awards and manages state student loans.  

If you choose to take out a loan, make sure you check out student loan forgiveness programs from the federal government and state agencies to see if you qualify. Different student loan repayment plans are also available through federal and state government to help you manage paying off your student loan debt after you graduate; your loan provider may have additional repayment options
